Jindřichův Hradec
I FINALLY Traveled south to Jindřichův Hradec this morning. Left at 7:16am on the IC train from Prague to Linc Austria, getting off at Veseli nad Luz, then taking a small train to end the journey. It was cold, windy and quite overcast with Purple;-)
clouds and very little sunshine today. It took exactly three hours.
Jindřichův Hradec is a small city found in southern Bohemia, in the direction of Cesky Budejovice. This is an area of the Czech Republic called Czech Canada, due to its beautiful hills, valleys, lakes and forests.
This city has quite a large and majestic castle complex which includes a combination of both a castle and a chateau along with many attached buildings, all to be found at the confluence of the Nežárka River and Hamerský Brook. The town itself has two large lakes right in the middle of it, as well as a large public town square, named Náměstí Miru(peace square).
For over seven centuries, the chateau/castle residence and the town were owned by seven generations of three leading aristocratic families. The Castle was constructed in 1220 and is connected with the name of Lord Jindřich Vítkovec, the founder of the independent Vítek branch of the Lords of Hradec(in case you are wondering)
The castle was later enlarged into quite a magnificent chateau, abd served these Lords of Hradec as their main residence until the family died out in 1604(to je skoda). Its was a gradual enlargement from a solid Romanesque-Gothic castle into a majestic Gothic fortress with its fortifications.
