Petřin Hill......Hunger Wall

One can see the Hunger Wall clearly in this picture. The Hunger Wall was built, similar to a public service project, devised to help feed the poor, by allowing them to work for food for themselves and their families.

The Hunger Wall was built by order Czech King Charles IV between 1360 – 62. It is said that Charles IV built this wall with the aim to help the poor in Prague in the time of terrible famine. Old records prove that Czech lands really suffered from great famine in the 1360s.

Certainly, it must have also served a dual purpose of necessity during those times as well.
