Facts #5 - Castles

There are over 2,000 castles, 'keeps'(a keep is a strong central tower; often the most defended area of a castle; or was the area where stores were kept) and castle ruins in the Czech Republic, and has one of the highest densities of castles per square kilometer in the world (notably after Belgium and France).

The Czech Republic also has the largest castle in the world as well: Prague Castle.

I am have seen several since I have been here: Prague Castle(of course), Vyšehrad, Troje, Karlstejn, Křivoklát, Melník, Nymburk, Poděbrady, Brandy's nad Labem, Lysa nad Labem, Brno, Dobřís, Orlík nad Vltavou, Hluboká nad Vltavou, Buchlovice, Kromeřicz, Bouzov, Pernstejn, Bezděz, Konapiště, Pruhonice, Blátna, Březnice, Rozmitál, Tábor, Česky Krumlov, Losíny, The Summer Palace in Vipich, Loket, ... ...

but, I have only touched the tip of the iceberg, so to speak... :-)

..and they are all amazing. AND of course, most are on the tops of hills ...just think: standing on cobblestones, stone stairs, under vaulted arches and walking down pathways that were used 900 years ago by royalty and people just trying to live and to stay alive. Seeing what artisans created in stone work that has spanned the test of time(to some point) is thought provoking.

many many more to see... Cheers
