Benošov - and some Golf

Was invited by a friend and his wife to join them for some golf today. This morning we traveled south about 40km to Benošov, to the Golf Resort Konopiště. (Top Picture)

The course is built on the Manorial Estate of Tvoršovice, which dates back to the 10th century. The Konopiště Castle (4th Picture) can be seen just a bit off in the distance, as one of it's towers overlooks the golf course(s). This is a fairly new course and was inaugurated in July 2002.

The last owner, the Bartoň family, used it as a summer residence. There are two 18 hole Masters courses; the Radecky Course bearing the name of one of the former owners, famous marshal of Napoleonic Wars Václav Radecky of Radeč, and the D’Este Course named after Archduke Ferdinand d’Este, successor to the Austrian Throne. There is also a 9 hole public course, on which we played this morning.

It was totally enjoyable and I actually did pretty well, even got one par and one birdie. Not bad. We all had fun. It was a really beautiful day up until the very last hole when it started to rain, and then a crack of thunder.. and a Siren blew.

Here at the first sign of thunder and/or lightning, a siren blows, and Everyone...EVERYONE must come in off the courses and return to the clubhouse. They do not take the possibility of lightning strike deaths lightly.(Last year a golfer was killed by lightning as he raised his club to take a swing..and Zap!) Luckily we had just finished the round and were on our way in as it went off. Great timing.

It rained most of the way back to Prague, like in raining cats and dogs raining.
