Mariánské Lázně

Grabbed a train this morning to the beautiful Spa Resort town of Mariánské Lázně. A 3 hour trip in total. It lies south of Prague and an hour southwest of Plzen in a beautiful wide valley in West Bohemia. It is a Spa town, and known for its health "resorts" and curative Carbon Dioxide springs. Almost 100 old springs have been discovered in and around the town, all with a high concentration of CO2; some were discovered as early as in the 16th century. The Architecture was stunning, and its park almost un-natural in their beauty.

The town, surrounded by green mountains of Cesky les, is a mosaic of parks and noble houses. The place obtained its actual name of Marienbad in 1808; became a watering-place in 1818, and received its charter as a town in 1868. Most of its buildings come from the town's Golden Era in the second half of the 19th century.

Although the town itself is only about two hundred years old, the locality has been inhabited much longer. The first written record dates back to 1273, when there was a village of Úšovice. The springs first appear in a document dating from 1341 where they are called "the Auschowitzer springs" belonging to the Tepl Abbey.

...and a perfect summer day. Blue sky and close to 90F.
