Nelahozeves Chateau

Today I visited Nelahozeves ; a very small village on left bank of the Vltava river, 25 km north of Prague, and not far from Veltrusy, which I visited in late July. A short 44 minutes Train ride from Prague, with the first photo being what you see as soon as you get off the train.

The Romantic composer Antonín Dvořák was born in Nelahozeves(I will post something further on him later)

The oldest surviving written document of Nelahozeves' existence dates back to 1352.

Roudnicka Castle or Nelahozeves chateau is one of the nicest Renaissance chateaus in the Czech Republic. It is a three-winged Renaissance Chateau(zamek) of Italian castello type with arcades in the yard. Florián Griespech of Griespach starting building the chateau in 1532. It took him 60 years before it was finished.

Then, in 1623 the family’s financial situation forced them to sell the Renaissance residence to Princess Polyxena Lobkowicz and since this date it has been owned by the Lobkowicz family(387 years!). It was confiscated by the Communists in 1948, but in 1993 it was returned to the Roudnice branch of the Lobkowicz family.

The chateau is fully furnished with period Furniture and Art work from many of the great Masters, which all belong to the Lobkowicz family. An excellent tour. These chateaus and castles still continue to amaze me.
