Just say No !
The Czech Republic and the US will sign a treaty today to build a missile defense radar on Czech soil despite 68% opposition here in the Czech Republic. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is here in Prague to sign the deal which may not make it through the Czech parliament in the end. Only 24% of the Czech citizenry support this.
The United States wants to build this radar base at the Brdy military district, some 90km southwest of Prague, and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland within its missile shield. The residents in this general area of the Czech Republic do NOT want this base in their backyard and are quite opposed to this intrusion by the US. The Czech Republic has been consistently occupied by foreign governments throughout it's history, and since the fall of Communism here in 1989, they understandably have an increased sense of nationalism where they just DO NOT wish to have any foreign governments present on their soil. They have lived through the oppression of being occupied by the Nazi's during the war and then again oppressed by the Communists here from the end of the 2nd World War to 1989. Although I am an American, I find my support is behind the people of this country and with the people in the Příbam and surrounding towns.
One wonders why, since Germany is so close to this area of the Czech Republic, the US could not have just built it there, especially with the technology we are all capable of these days. We will never know that one. Governments rarely listen to their people, the ones they are suppose to serve. +53
